Colt 1911 Master Plate / Nimschke Style Scroll
Master plate of Nimschke style Colt 1911. This plate was developed for a 1911 engraving class and contains all the various sections from a Colt 1911 pistol. While researching period scroll styles for the 2022 Colt Collectors Association auction gun project, I decided to do a deep dive into this distinctive scroll and develop my own take on it. This is the result of that research. It's a great reference for learning the nuance that gives Nimschke scroll it's distinctive look. The plate is 6x3" and represents actual size for a Colt 1911 A1 Gov. model.
This plate is a great way to study the style and to be used as a reference when developing your own Nimschke style scroll. Please note that the artwork on this plate should not be copied for commercial use. It will however provide you with a recipe to create your own version.
Nimschke 1866 Winchester Plate
This plate is a copy of the side plate from LD Nimschke's famous 1866 Silver Winchester rifle. If you are interested in learning Nimschke scroll, this plate is a great representative sampling of some of his best work. I've updated the shading a bit to reflect modern engraving practices but the scroll is all Nimschke. A casting is the next best thing to having the actual engraving in front of you. Most of us will never get to see the Nimschke 1866 Winchester first hand. This casting is the next best thing.
Colt 1911 Nimschke Style Scroll Casting
This casting was taken from a Colt 1911 pistol that was engraved with my own style of Nimschke Scroll. It's a great example of the style to study and retains all of the depth and clarity of the original gun.
This is a replica resin casting of the Firearms Engravers Guild of America Colt 1911 that I engraved for the 2019 auction. While that gun now resides in a private collection, anyone can own a casting of the original slide.
Resin castings are a fantastic study aid for beginning engravers who are often attempting to learn something they've never seen in real life. Guns like this 1911 are placed in private collections and rarely seen in public again so the novice engraver almost never gets a chance to study the real thing. Photos can only convey so much information. This is as close as it gets to holding the actual engraving in hand.
Not only are castings great study aid but they're a fun way to collect the work of your favorite engravers without having to spend the thousands of dollars it would take to commission an actual engraving.
Due to the way these are produced, there may be some imperfections but the castings are extremely detailed and provide all the depth and detail of the original.
(obviously, gun not included)
Practice Scroll Plate Set
This set was created to offer the beginner a way to transfer a set of clean scroll backbones or scroll design outlines to a practice plate using transfer wax. Many beginners have trouble creating perfect scroll backbones and this will give you a set of clean backbones that you can practice creating designs with. You may also use the scroll design outline as a transfer in order to practice shading. The set comes with two plates. An outline plate and a finished engraving plate that you can use as reference when cutting.
If you are unfamiliar with using transfer wax you can refer to my tips videos on YouTube at www.youtube.com/c/masterengravertv for an explanation of this simple method of transferring a design from a master plate to another object or practice plate.
Sculpted Scroll Ring Casting
This casting was taken from a 10mm wide sculpted scroll platinum band. You'll be able to see all of the detail of the original ring and use this as a study tool to start engraving your own sculpted jewelry.
(Original ring for reference only. Not included in purchase.)
Key Tag Project Casting
This set includes a blank brass key tag, casting, a laser copy of the original artwork for transfer and instructions.
Using the casting for reference you'll be able to transfer the scroll outline to your key tag and hand engrave a beautiful brass tag for yourself.
Instructions for using the acetone transfer method are included. With the casting in hand you'll be able to see up close what finely shaded deep relief scroll should look like.
Original key tag is for reference only and not included in the set.
Lettering Plate Casting- Inked
This is a casting from an original plate engraved as a master for a local sugar plantation. Castings are a great learning tool. The next best thing to holding the actual engraving in hand.
